The AI Director was enabled in the August 23, 2010 Patch to Alien Swarm as a part of the Onslaught Difficulty mode. Like the AI Director code used in Left 4 Dead, and Left 4 Dead 2, the Alien Swarm AI Director dynamically generates swarms of aliens based on several factors, such as the squad's stress level.
